Brentwood based therapeutic project ignites passion for music amongst young people

Writing songs, making music and building confidence is the focus of Kids Inspire’s new Sing My Own Song project.

Led by Play and Music Therapist Fiona and two young songwriter volunteers, the sessions have helped a small group of 13-19 year olds to creatively express themselves, test different ideas and musical forms in a supportive environment.

Mini mixers were loaned to the group so they could practice and perform their creations both during the Zoom sessions and in their own time.

For participants to receive and become acquainted with their new mini mixers, it became apparent that a face-to-face meet was essential. Adhering to social distancing measures, the group met safely at Kids Inspire’s headquarters - Hargrave House - which has been operational when service-user needs required.

One Brentwood based 12 year old said: “I really enjoy the sessions and during the day it’s something I can look forward to because we can’t do much at the moment.”

Another said: “It’s going great. I’m creating loads of music. I’ve learnt how to edit samples and how to make sounds shorter and longer, faster and slower. One of the reasons I joined was to get involved with music again.”

At Kids Inspire we value the benefits of Creative Therapies for the evidenced healing that arts can bring about through dynamic, symbolic, expressive activities. The Sing My Own Song project taps into the powerful influence music can have on our wellbeing.

Fiona, Kids Inspire Music Therapist says: “there is music for every feeling, every emotion, and it is music’s expressive, emotional nature that can help each of us become more self-aware and bring about emotions we might be suppressing”
