Joe

Joe’s story

Joe is an 11-year-old boy, who was referred for mental health support following ongoing struggles with anxiety, difficulties in emotional expression, and challenges in social interactions at school. These concerns had led to significant stress for both Joe and his family.

Towards the end of his therapy, Joe’s mother reflected on his journey, offering a deeply personal insight into the transformative effects of his treatment.

“When Joe first began therapy, his struggles were clear. He found it difficult to express his emotions, often becoming frustrated and withdrawn. Articulating his feelings felt like an unachievable challenge, and the social dynamics of school only added to his distress. His peers who bothered or excluded him left him feeling isolated, and his growing anxiety manifested in behaviours like skin-picking and a reluctance to attend school. At home, these challenges strained the family dynamic, with moments of miscommunication amplifying the stress for everyone.

“However, over time, Joe’s progress was nothing short of remarkable. At the time, I described him as: "grown up all of a sudden."

“As he continued with his therapy, Joe developed a deeper understanding of his emotions and how they influenced his behaviour. This newfound self-awareness became a powerful tool, allowing him to recognise when situations were becoming overwhelming and to take proactive steps, such as removing himself from the environment to self-regulate.

“Communication also saw a profound shift. Where he once struggled with long delays in expressing his feelings, Joe began opening up more freely and promptly. This was especially apparent in his willingness to discuss school-related challenges and his interactions with peers. These conversations allowed his parents to provide more effective support, fostering a sense of partnership and understanding within the family.

“Joe’s anxiety also began to diminish. While some behaviours, like skin-picking, persisted, they became less frequent and less intense.

“His overall demeanour grew calmer, and he approached daily routines with greater ease. His attitude toward school reflected this progress.”

“Though there were still occasional moments of hesitation, Joe demonstrated resilience, finding the strength to push past his reluctance and engage more confidently with his school and social environment.

“Towards the end of his support, my pride and hopes for him were clear and I shared with his therapist:

"Joe understands himself a bit more now and our family dynamic has also shifted.”

With improved communication came stronger bonds and a sense of relief from the tensions that once loomed over us.”
